Maplestory | Familiar System

The Familiar System in Maplestory is a system where when some monsters are defeated, they might drop a familiar card that can then be used to use summon that monsters as an ally. The Familiar System is now much more robust, complex, grindy and rewarding than it’s previous iteration but this has opened up to many more opportunities for Nexon to introduce new bugs and to monetize this new system.

maplestory-roro

The familiar card then can be used in the player’s Use inventory registering the familiar into Roro, the Familiar Codex. After registering a Familiar to the Familiar Codex, players can then summon that familiar into Battle.

Familiar Summon Gauge

While the Familiars are summoned, they will deplete the Summon Gauge. The rate that the Summon Gauge depletes depends on the total sum of your summoned Familiars’ Defenese. That means having 3 familiars active at once will always make the Summon Gauge deplete slow than just having 1 or 2 active. This Summon Gauge gets reset back to full at midnight of everyday.

maplestory-familiar-roro

Initially players can only summon 1 familar but you can unlock the remaining 2 through:

  • Slot 2: Unlocked by completing a quest after collecting your first Familiar Badge.
  • Slot 3: Unlocked by completing a quest after collecting 10 Familiar Badges.

Familiar Potentials

Originally these Familiars had a fixed potential ability but as of the revamp, every new Familiar will grant 2 potentials where one is based on their current rank and other based is on the previous rank. Players can then roll their Familiar’s potential to get a multitude of abilities such as (but not limited to):

  • MaxHP +10
  • MaxMP +5
  • LUK +2
  • DEX +2
  • STR +2
  • INT +2
  • All Stats (STR/DEX/INT/LUK) +2
  • DEF +10
  • Weapon ATT +2
  • Magic ATT +2
  • Speed +2
  • Jump +2
  • MaxHP +2%
  • Magic ATT +3%
  • All Stats (STR/DEX/INT/LUK) +1%
  • Weapon Attack +3%
  • Damage +3%
  • DEF +2%
  • Critical Rate +3%
  • Ignore Enemy DEF +15%
  • Chance to recover HP/MP
  • All Skill

You may even get some Potentials that don’t add any stats and is solely cosmetic.

Familiars that were registered before the Familiar Revamp retain their set potential abilities.

Familiar Rarities

Familiar Rarities range from Common, Rare, Epic, Unique and Legendary with higher rarity familiars being harder to obtain because they will have better stats and abilities associated with them. Currently, Legendary Rarity Familiars can only be obtained by spending money using Red Familiar Cards.

Familiar Levels

While a Familiar is summoned, it will gain 1 exp for every monsters killed within your level range. Familiars that are not of Unique or Legendary rarity can only reach a maximum level of 5. Familiar will level up when they reach the EXP thresholds below:

  • Lv. 2: 300 EXP
  • Lv. 3: 600 EXP
  • Lv. 4: 1,200 EXP
  • Lv. 5: 2.400 EXP

Familiars of Unique or Legendary rarity can be level up to a maximum of Level 7 by using a Familiar Breakthrough Card which increases the maximum level by 1. These can be obtained in the Cash Shop and 2 must be used to reach Level 7. Familiar will level up when they reach the EXP thresholds below:

  • Lv. 6: 2,600 EXP
  • Lv. 7: 2,800 EXP

Familiar Stat Bonuses

Here are the Attack Power & Defense bonuses that a Familiar of a certain rarity and level will provide:

Ranking up Familiar Rarities

A Familiar’s rarity can be increased up to Unique once a Familiar’s level has reached level 5. Once the Familiar’s Level reaches Level 5, you can use Fusion to fuse duplicates to increase the Familiar’s Rank-Up Points depending on duplicate’s rarity.

  • Common Familiar: 1 Rank-Up Point
  • Rare Familiar: 2 Rank-Up Points
  • Epic Familiar: 3 Rank-Up Points
  • Unique Familiar: 4 Rank-Up Points
  • Legendary Familiar: 5 Rank-Up Points

The Rank-Up points can then be spent to attempt an Rank-Up for your familiar at these rates:

  • Common -> Rare: 50 Rank-Up Points, 100% chance of success
  • Rare -> Epic: 100 Rank-Up Points, 80% chance of success
  • Epic -> Unique: 150 Rank-Up Points, 40% chance of success

Familiar Badges

This is a new mechanic introduced through the Familiar revamp. Players can now receive a Familiar Badge by collecting Familiars within a certain region. These Badge will provide bonuses stats to the player but only a maximum of 8 Badges out of the current 38 Badges can be equipped at once.

All the stats from badges are stackable except for:

  • Chance to recover HP/MP
  • All Skill

Maplestory 2 | Official Launch

Maplestory 2 has officially launched today and is currently available on both the Nexon Launcher or Steam.

Along with Maplestory 2’s launch is the release of the new Runeblade class that wasn’t available during the previous Betas and Karkar Island. Plus the Level Cap has been increased to 60 for the official launch.

Travel to Karkar Island, a gorgeous resort island where absolutely nothing could possibly be wrong! That is, aside from the swarms of insects, undead monstrosities, vile devils and… belligerent gaming consoles?

Maplestory | Lab Server & The Legion Block

The Lab Server for Maplestory is now open, it will be opened for 20 days or roughly 3 weeks and end on August 28th, right before server reset at 5 PM PDT.

Lab Server is a hardcore version of Maplestory where players can only pick an explorer classes, monsters HP are doubled and have 5 times their original stats. If the player dies anytime while playing in the Lab Server, there levels and stats will be reset to Lvl. 10. Plus, players are only limited to having one character. The Lab Server character will be erased when Lab Server ends.

Although this server is hard, a viable strategy is just to purposely keep dying because the game rewards the “Please stop dying” skill to players if they keep dying. The skill has a maximum of 100 levels and each level grants +1 Monster DEF Ignored, W.ATK +20, M.ATK +20 and it level up every 5 deaths. The levels for the skill are applied until after the daily reset and there is a cap per day. The maximum stats that I suspect that can be given by this skill is 2000 W.ATK/M.ATK and 105% Monster DEF Ignored.

The Lab Server can be accessed normally through Maplestory without needing to download a separate client. The Lab Server tab should be right after Reboot, it might be invisible leading players to have to tab through Servers to reach it.

Leveling Rewards

Now, why would players play a harder version of Maplestory that eventually go away? Because of the Legion Block. Playing Lab Server is the only way players can obtain the Legion Block that is used with Maple Legion.

  • [Lab Server] Lv. 150 Celebration Gift!: Reach Lv. 150 and receive:
  • Legion Block: This item will be sent to the world you select, after the Lab server event ends. (See more details below.)
  • Revive and Strengthen: Chair
  • Eternal Rebirth Flame (1 Day)

revive_and_strengthen_chair_lab_server.jpg

The Legion Block grants W.ATK, M.ATK and Maple Legion Board titles based on the highest level you character reaches in Lab Server. Players must reach Level. 150 to receive the first Legion Block then purposely die and accept the new quest that allows players to obtain the Enhanced Legion Block which gives more stats than the original Legion Block. The Quests that become available after dying at 150 are:

  • Complete ‘[Lab Server] Level 200 Survivalist!’:
    • Enhanced Legion Block: This item will be sent to the world you select, after the Lab server event ends. (See more details below.)
    • Eternal Rebirth Flame (1 Day)
  • Complete ‘[Lab Server] Defeat Lab Server Von Leon with the Strange PT Bottle’
    • Lab Server Master Crown
    • Eternal Flame Rebirth (1 Day) (x2)

It is very important to immediately accept the new quests right after dying as they become unacceptable if you level at all. Which is dumb, I guess.

The Enhanced Legion Block essentially just grants an extra 2 W.ATK and M.ATK at each threshold. (The website says “Highest Level reached” but I’m skeptical since why would they give stats to Lvl. 60, 100 and 140 threshold if players theoretically can’t get the legion block before 150? So they might be a chance that it’s not highest level reached but rather current level) The Legion Block will be sent to your choice of server after the event has concluded.

Maplestory M | Global Launch

Maplestory M has now launched globally on the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Maplestory M is the mobile extremely water-downed casual version of Maplestory that includes auto-questing, auto-fighting and only 5 classes: Dark Knight, Bowmaster, Night Lord, Bishop and Corsair; each representative of the 5 base explore classes in Maplestory.

Although the game is extremly water-downed, it still includes the ability to play with friends, chat, trade, start a guild, upgrades gear, fight bosses and do dungeons solo or with players that are apart of the original Maplestory.

Maplestory | Ark

Maplestory‘s next upcoming expansion Ark is releasing on June 20th. Maplestory Ark will include the addition of the new pirate class Ark, Morass Area, Grand Athenaeum Part 5: Shadow Alchemist, Esfera Area and Monad Area.

Before the release of Ark, Maplestory is having a Community Event that lasts up to June 20th where players share news about Ark on both twitter and facebook for everyday leading up to the event to receive those rewards immediately plus a bonus reward box for sharing all the news. This is all done through Maplestory Ark’s micro-site.

There is also an in-game Ark Attendance Check that will last until Ark’s launch where players have to defeat monsters within their level range to receive a stamp for that given day.
